Obstetric Ultrasound (19 week Anatomy Scan) Appointment Preparation

This type of ultrasound is used during pregnancy.  Ultrasound scans are a safe and non-invasive way to examine the fetus.  Measurements are taken for the assessment of gestational age, size and growth of the fetus.  A full anatomic assessment is made during this exam.  You may request photos prior to this exam and you will be allowed to view the screen.

Preparation:

  • Your bladder must be uncomfortably full for this exam, otherwise the exam may be non-diagnostic and will need to be rescheduled!  Fluid in the bladder optimizes images of the desired anatomy because we use the bladder as an imaging window.
  • 1 ½ hours prior to your exam we want you to completely empty your bladder. This is the last time you will be able to go to the washroom before your exam.
  • Immediately after you go to the washroom start drinking 3 eight ounce glasses (24 ounces in total) of clear liquid finishing 1 hour before your appointment (it should take you 30 minutes to drink your liquid).
  • You are then going to hold your bladder until your appointment. If you are painfully full, please speak to the booking desk and they will give you further instructions.
  • Please report to the Ultrasound check-in 15 minutes before your appointment time.
  • At the request of the patient, one other ADULT may observe at the end of the obstetrical exam, once all the diagnostic requirements have been documented.
  • Fetal gender may be determined at this exam. You may ask to know the gender or the sonographer may put the gender in the report for your doctor to find out and inform you later.
  • You will receive a reminder call 1-2 days prior to your exam.

Pictures are available for $5.00 cash per set.  Please make the request at the beginning of the exam.

NOTE: We charge $50.00 for missed appointments or for cancellations with less than 24 hours notice.
